- The much talked about and widely publicised Spoken Word and Music show, ALEWA finally came off at the state-of-the-art Sweeties Lounge on the Spintex. People from all walks of life thronged the venue to experience what POETS had been making so much noise about. The pretty ladies were there in their numbers decently dressed and the gentlemen looked their best on the night.Elijah Ekow Atta-Aidoo
The event kicked off an hour late (typical Ghanaian event) with Daniel (O'Zionn) opening the floor with a recital on the Powers of Poetry and Paul (100%), MC for the night welcoming patrons with a performance that gave credence to his stage name, 100% and whetting the appetite of all present for more on the night. Elikplim showed why he is the God of Poetry with a laughter that can easily make u pee in your pants resonated in the auditorium when he came on stage. He delivered his act without stress. Africa's Spoken Word Queen Poetra mesmerized the audience with beautiful poetry with Akwele backing her with her silky voice. They indeed proved that ‘What a man can do, a woman can do and even better’. The bed bug man, Kyekyeku and the Gari f)t) man, DK Yaw Osei got the audience tapping their feet’s and nodding their heads to good music. DK’s stage craft is was really out of this world.
Guest Poet, Mariska Taylor Darko (He used his long tongue to lick my Alewa...it's not my fault), and Guest Author, Alba K. Sunprim(I was born in London, schooled in Cuba and lived in Brazil) really blessed us on the night. We had a good laugh during their ALEWA moments. Mariska I think should start a poetry mentoring school here in Ghana because she is a class act on any day. Her last recital is still etched in my memory. And hey if you’ve not had your copy of Alba’s two books, then you better do so now…..well written and lots of lessons in there for all of us.
On the night the lady poets were a sight to behold….Edith Ndabi was looking all radiant and did what she knows and does bests...flawless poetry recital. I liked her front though! The modern day traditionalist, Selikem poured contemporary poetry libation. Yom showed us all what a real Ghana boy is made off with Kyekyeku on the strings. Ribboam gave the sweet ladies a real taste of the songs they enjoy in the soap operas. Mutombo was impressive as always...respect man for keeping the poetry flag high.
Then came the unveiling of the Minister of Poetry, Rhyme Sonny and he killed it one time. He delivered some strong punches to politicians. He was looking all handsome, though without a smile on his face. With all the scandals surrounding most clergy in the country at the moment, Daniel, Kwame Write, Rita & Nii’s Confessions, was on point. That’s what poetry should be used for…..addressing societal problems.
The climax of the night was the performance by Chief Momeen and he didn’t disappoint. He gave patrons of the event a song that will keep ringing in their heads forever... ‘Children of the art, they are singing ALEWA... ALEWA in numbers... ALEWA number 4 ooo.’
All in all the event was a success and we look forward to bigger and better ALEWA in the near future. Congratulations to all POETS…you made it happen!--Written by
